April is Autism Awareness Month:
As part of our commitment to our community, Fresh Dermatology has chosen to support AutismSpeaks.org in their efforts to “Shine a Light on Autism”.
This Thursday, April 24th, Fresh Dermatology will donate 100% of the proceeds from skin care product purchases to Autism Speaks. If you are running low on sunscreen, moisturizer, or antioxidants, now is the time to buy!
A few facts regarding Autism:
*1 in 68 children have Autism Spectrum Disorders
*1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls have Autism
*The average age of diagnosis is 4-5 years of age, but the diagnosis can be made as early as 18-24 months of age.
*Early intervention leads to better outcomes in the majority of cases.
*Many people don’t know the signs of Autism. When should you be concerned? Below are a list of “red flags” which should prompt a visit to the pediatrician.
- No warm smiles or joyful expressions by 6 months of age
- No back-and-forth sharing of sounds, smiles, and facial expressions by 9 months
- No babbling by 12 months
- No pointing, reaching, or waving by 12 months
- No words by 16 months
- No two word phrases by 24 months
- Loss of speech or social skills at any age
- No response to name by 12 months
If your child has missed any of the above behaviors, don’t panic, simply schedule an appointment with your pediatrician to discuss your child’s development. Another helpful resource is the Autism Speaks Video Glossary, which can be found at www.autismspeaks.org/what-autism/video-glossary.
See you Thursday April 24th!
